Rats are highly adaptable rodents that commonly invade homes, businesses, and other structures in search of food, water, and shelter. They are excellent climbers, swimmers, and burrowers, which allows them to access buildings through very small openings. Once inside, rats can quickly establish nests and reproduce rapidly, making a small issue turn into a serious infestation if not addressed promptly.

In addition to being destructive, rats are known carriers of bacteria and diseases that can threaten human health. They can contaminate food, damage property, and create unsanitary living conditions.

NORWAY RATS

Norway rats are large, heavy-bodied rodents that can grow up to 16 inches long, including the tail. They are brown or gray in color with blunt noses and small ears. Norway rats prefer to live at ground level and often burrow in soil near building foundations, under patios, or along sidewalks.

These rats commonly enter homes through basements, crawl spaces, and lower levels of buildings. They are strong gnawers and can chew through wood, plastic, and even softer metals to gain access to food and nesting areas.

ROOF RATS

Roof rats are smaller and more slender than Norway rats, with longer tails and pointed noses. They are typically dark brown or black in color. As their name suggests, roof rats are excellent climbers and are most often found in upper areas of structures such as attics, ceilings, and rooflines.

They frequently enter buildings through roof vents, gaps in eaves, or tree branches that hang over structures. Roof rats often nest in insulation, wall voids, and other hidden spaces.

DANGERS ASSOCIATED WITH RATS

Rats pose serious health and safety risks. They can spread bacteria and diseases through their droppings, urine, and saliva, contaminating food and surfaces in kitchens, pantries, and storage areas.

Rats also cause structural damage by constantly gnawing on materials to keep their teeth from overgrowing. They may chew through wood, drywall, and even electrical wiring, which can create fire hazards. Their nesting materials and droppings can also contribute to foul odors and unsanitary conditions inside buildings.

RAT PREVENTION

Preventing rat infestations starts with eliminating the things that attract them: food, water, and shelter. Keep garbage in sturdy containers with tight-fitting lids and store pet food and dry goods in sealed containers. Outdoor trash bins should be kept away from building entrances when possible.

Inspect your property for openings or gaps around doors, windows, vents, and utility lines. Rats can squeeze through surprisingly small spaces, so sealing these entry points is critical. Trim tree branches and shrubs away from your home to prevent roof access for climbing rodents.

Inside your home or business, promptly clean up food spills and crumbs, avoid leaving food out overnight, and regularly remove trash. Maintaining a clean environment makes it much less appealing for rats to move in.

RAT TREATMENT

Professional rat control focuses on identifying entry points, nesting areas, and food sources that support rodent activity. Effective treatment may include trapping programs, strategic bait placement, and exclusion techniques to prevent rats from re-entering the structure.

Because rats reproduce quickly and are highly intelligent, professional monitoring and follow-up treatments are often necessary to fully eliminate an infestation. A comprehensive rodent control plan helps protect your property, reduce health risks, and prevent future rat problems.
